For all you switch-hitters out there

An interesting article regarding Vermont representative Jim Jeffords and his brave party-switching actions… Aren’t they all Republicrats, anyway? :) Link via email sumbission.

It does not take brain surgery to figure out that I really was standing still and the two major parties were revolving around me.

MediaDied

So there’s this store in Denver, known to the local Macintosh-using residents as just about the only independent seller of Apple products. So if you don’t want to go to CompUSA for that RAM for your aging 9600, you go to MediaGuide. And as it seems, Media Guide is going out of business. Maybe if those fuckers weren’t total jerks, I’d care. The upside is that there’s a giant sale about to start. Who knows what I’ll end up with.

If only I had ten million dollars

Gateway has a new $10,000,000.00 package on their 9500 series laptops.

256MB SDRAM, 20GB Ultra ATA Removable hard drive, 16MB 4x AGP ATI Mobility-M4 Graphics. Integrated 56K Modem and IEEE 1394 (only available with PIII850 CPU) [ US +$10000000]

Must be the integrated FireWire.

The penguin’s in one corner..

Sorry about the lack of updates recently… I’ve been wrestling with a dilapidated HP and SuSE Linux the past few days. Good news: I did finally get PHP, Apache & MySQL playing nicely together, and now can recompile those bastards at will. It’s this damn Mac-networking thing I can’t get the hang of. But I’m sure I will soon, hopefully. So please be patient, once that’s taken care of, you’ll start seeing some new sites spewed forth, most notably Retinal.nu, a site that Eddie and I are working on together, and an oh-so-special website showcasing the cuteness of my 2 kids, one brand-new and the other not-so-much.

Natural selection is not the same as survival of the fittest

Is anyone really that surprised by this?

Nootch

There is a god: Jay and Silent Bob have their own movie coming out. Hellz to the mutha-fuckin-yeah…

Delightful

So while installing SuSE Linux on an old HP Pavilion today, I clicked the best button I have ever clicked: ‘Delete Windows Entirely.’ Ah… now THAT felt good.

A Politician with a Conscience?

Senator James Jeffords of Vermont made a historical and radical move by leaving the Republican party to become an Independent. His decision changes the make up of the Senate by giving control to the Democrats.
In order to best represent my state of Vermont, my own conscience and principles that I have stood for my whole life, I will leave the Republican Party and become an independent,” Jeffords said as his supporters erupted in cheers. The GOP responded in its usual manner of name calling and senselessness, “My concern for Jeffords is that his legacy will be as one of Benedict Arnold.”

I doubt their concern is for Jeffords legacy but for their own financial gains they thought they had in the bag.

Mac Security

Apple has finally listened to the UNIX community and setup a site for security announcements and security reporting. This is great, since we all know UNIX gets hacked and having a company like Apple NOT responding or listening to security issues would cause lots of problems. I mean, the more we (and apple) know about the hacks and holes in Mac OS X the better. Leaving us to fend for ourselves and wait for updates hoping they have the security issues resolved was not something the Mac,UNIX or OpenSource community was looking forward to.

Gah

Why didn’t someone tell me Neil Gaiman has a weblog?

Tex Ass

Fucking Bush.

Bill Clinton, before his final bow, issued an order on December 14, halting uncontrolled speculation in the electricity market. You could hear the yowls all the way to Texas where the big winners in the power game Enron, TXU, Reliant, Dynegy and El Paso corporation are headquartered. These five energy operators, through their executives and employees, ponied up $4.1 million for the Republican Presidential campaign cycle, according to the Center for Responsive Politics in Washington.
They didn’t have long to wait before their investment – excuse me, donation – paid off big time. Just three days after his inauguration, Bush swept away Clinton’s orders directing controlled power sales to California.

A little backdoor action…

Remember the good virus? Turns out it wasn’t so good after all:

Systems infected with Max’s worm downloaded a software patch and automatically repaired the security hole that would have allowed the malicious worm to comprise the system. That’s a good thing.

But Max’s worm, which he developed by reprogramming the malicious worm, also left a secret backdoor in all the systems it penetrated. That’s the bad part.

The hacker who developed it is now in prison. Who’dathunk.

I HATE this site (not alternate.org)

This site pisses me off on so many levels. The design sucks, the name is offensive, the subject matter is ridiculous and even the way he is serving it is fuckin’ horrible.

I’m probably feeding into the exact reaction this guy is looking for. Ugh.

Lots o Shit….

Today at Apples World Wide Developer Conference, Apple made the following announcements;

All new Apple systems will ship with Mac OS X pre-installed.

Apple said that the two new retail locations had more than 7,000 visitors in one weekend. They managed to take in approximately $600,000 in sales.

A new version of Mac OS X Server shipped that is based on the aqua look and feel of Mac OS X. It contains Apache, Samba, and WebObjects support.

A new 17-inch Apple Studio Display flat panel with a maximum resolution of 1280 by 1024 pixels, is available for $999.

Apple lowered the price of its Cinema Display once again from $2999 to $2499.

WebObjects 5, an update to the company’s Java-based application server.

Sweet 17

Did no one see this? New Apple 17-inch flat-panel displays. At just under a grand, they ain’t cheap, but still pretty rad.
